Anyone got the first idea how to start this one? Here's the rubric:
Special instructions: Each solution includes a repeated letter, not referred to in its clue's wordplay. These letters in 52 of the solutions cover the full alphabet (A to Z) twice: once separately, as in EvEry, and once as a double letter, as in wEEk. The solutions to the other six asterisked clues require a third appearance of the letters from the word TALKER.

Anyone else think this is a bit rich?

Thank you Scorpio. I take my hat off to you, don't think I'm going to get there with this one. Disappointed, usually love the holiday specials.
I felt as you do when I started but once you get a few it does become easier and more enjoyable. Don't give up too soon. Good luck
you will fraser ........ they were 2 of the harder clues ....... there are a lot which are easier:
11a anagram of chin a toe + ?? makes "down the pub"
26a 3 letter synonym for sheep reversed +i +?? - defn gallows
I am sure that roslyn251254 hints help but the hints make as much sense to me as the clues.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll give it another go.

It's crosswords like this that remind me how much I miss Araucaria, this was like doing your homework in a particularly dull subject, like walking through mud. With dear old John Graham however, although he could be fiendishly difficult, there was always joyful delight upon completing one of his crosswords. My apologies for the rant.
ludwigvan my sentiments exactly
Ditto
Mine, too. I do miss him.
And I/me.
It is not a rant - we should form a "save our crosswords" group and demonstrate outside the Guardian offices - and while we're at it, demand better prizes than remaindered books the papers can't sell.
Totally agree about the prizes. I gave mine away to a niece last month.
I've never looked at mine.
Think the Guardian has too many financial problems to be improving the crossword prize any time soon
I think you are being too harsh. I thoroughly enjoyed the challege. All it needed was some inventiveness fom our side.
It can't be in the local can it?
