First, could someone explain how I can ask a question without tagging on to some other person's query please? I am quite new to this site.
The immediate clue bothering me is : "Reportedly study sentence identifying N American singer". Is the answer "reed bird"? (and is that not a single word?
I sort of see the first bit and singer ca, of course, mean a bird. But the rest?

Reed sounds like read (study), bird is doing time/prison sentence.
