In fact there are two spices, meleguetta pepper and the true Grains of Paradise, Aframomum granum paradisi, referred to by this name. The Grain Coast of West Africa is named for the spice in the same way as the other ‘Coasts’ are called Ivory, Gold and Slave.
E-mail from Telegraph re alternative spellings:-
Dear Mr Kaye
Thanks very much for getting in touch about this.
It is unfortunate when there are alternative spellings that involve non-checking squares, and of course we try to avoid it.
However, if one does slip through, then we ensure fairness in the following way:
If we open an entry with a spelling that differs from our solution grid, we check to see if it is a legitimate alternative spelling.
If it is a legitimate alternative spelling, then we count it as a winning entry and we publish a note under the solution saying "We accepted Xxxxx as an alternative spelling".
Of course, if the first seven correct entries that we open don't have the alternative spelling, then we won't carry that note, because we won't have realised that there is such a possibility.
I hope that seems fair.
Yours faithfully,
