Thought for a moment that I would manage this on the first day unaided. Alas it was not to be and I am finally stuck on 3 interconnecting clues viz
21 down (3-3) in Glasgow, crazy guy runs up to pinch wife ?E?-??D (should know this having lived in the West of Scotland for 54 years)
26 across (9) weather-changing event, mostly in short tapering form, rapidly changing direction for snow ??D?L?I?G
28 across (7) once covered in fat, work off with a welcoming gesture? E?A?M?D
The last letter for these two depend on my interpretation of Ancient heavens spread evenly across Rio Grande (4) is correct as being AGED

21d Red-wud (Scot. "crazy") - 'dude r(uns)' (up, pinching) 'w(ife)'
26a Wedelning (rapid skiing movements) - 'El Nin(o)' (mostly, in) 'wedg(e)' (short)

28a Enarmed (obs. "larded; covered in fat") - 'open-armed' with 'op' (work, off)
