When I was a lad the prospect of walking about with your backside hanging out of your trousers would have been mortifying. Indeed, I wore a long raincoat for much of one summer for that very reason.
In recent times I've noticed young people with the knees out of their jeans. Today I saw a girl who'd brought this to a new level. There was a cut across the back of her jeans which revealed a pair of red shorts underneath.
Certainly eye catching, but scraping the bottom of the good taste barrel?

For younger people, being "fashionable" is much more important than being comfortable....why else would so many teenagers (mainly male) wear thick hoodies (hoods up, of course) when the temperature is in the mid-to-high twenties (eighties F)?
the notion of low-slung trousers began in emulation of prisoners, who have their belts removed in case they try to hang themselves. Thsi involves displaying their underwear, so fashionable brands often have their name printed round the band so everyone can see. Girls don't usually go in for this, but having your underwear visible is no longer improper for them either (probably not at work, unless they are professional hipsters.)

Ripping or "distressing" jeans by discolouration is supposed to make them look as though you've actually been working hard in them rather than just vulgarly buying them from a shop. Which most of them have, of course.
We have all looked bizarre, stupid, and possibly offensive to older people at some point sandy.

The process will continue for each new generation, and long may it.
distressing jeans has been a fad for years. I remember my elder brother in the 70s taking a brand new pair of Levis outside and scrubbing them for hours with Ajax and a yard brush on the garden path.
Its the wooly hat thing amongst boys that puzzle me......why do they wear them when its hot ?
Hides the premature bald spot.
And indoors as well mikey !
I remember sitting in the bath (with a bit of bleach in too) with a new pair of jeans on
a) to lighten them b) to shrink-fit them. Happy days.
Jammy....not when my Mum was alive !

She stopped all my nephews sitting down to Sunday lunch with baseball caps on, which was the fashion when I was younger.
Distressed Jeans are very fashionable and cost more to buy than those in perfect condition.

Incidentally, I dislike the wearing of Baseball Caps...back to front or sideways on.. and especially when indoors.

Hans.
When I was at college, my jeans were always distressed. They didn't get washed until the end of term, when I went home. My jeans didn't like that much!
