there is no clue for 53 down in my copy - has anyone else got lucky? 46 down (1)(5) ? B?S?N elementary particle discovered at CERN in 1983.

No it's not Z boson - if you read the clue it says SIMILAR to one with first letter Z. It is W boson! Thanks though for those who gave us the clue and answer to 53d - it's not printed in my paper either!

Must learn to read clue correctly. W Boson appears be correct

Many thanks to subsequent contributors for sorting out the Z and W bosons. Z did not look right given the wording of the clue but who am I to argue - a boson might as well be a hole in the ground so far as I know --- perhaps it is a hole in the ground -----.
