Late this afternoon I bought some chicken from a high street butcher. It's on a tray covered in cling film. When I got it home I split the cling film - and it absolutely reeks!! The shop is closed now so I can't take it back today. There's no way it's going in my fridge so my only solution was to wrap the whole lot, still in its tray, in more cling film and put in the freezer to take back on Monday. I'm guessing I'm going to have a fight to recover my money. What would you have done with it?

Just bin it.

when you say it pongs - exactly what of? a gone off smell or just the raw chicken juices smell after being in cling film?
is there an expiry date on it?
I do worry sometimes when I see meat left in shop windows with the sun blazing down on it! Good luck and I'm sure if you take the receipt with you and explain then you'll get a refund. Has the shop maybe got an answerfone where you could at least log a complaint?
Question Author
anneasquith, it cost £25.
Let it thaw out before taking it back.If he is backward in coming forward about reimbursement you should mention Health & Safety.
Question Author
jack daniels, it stinks, absolutely stinks. It made my husband feel sick - and he has a strong stomach!

rsvp, good idea. I'll try ringing them - if I can remember the name of the shop. I've never bought there before.

dannyk13, I'm reluctant to let it thaw before taking it back. The butcher might think I've not refrigerated it all weekend.
Just as an aside naomi what does 'some chicken' for £25 get you? You can buy a whole chicken here for £6 max.
If you leave it frozen he won't be able to smell it.
£25 for a chicken? Was it not a baby ostrich?
You have to defrost it I'd say , so that the butcher can examine it.

Does the packaging have a sell by date on it?

Captain2, eight organic chicken breasts.

I don't know. I didn't look. I assumed I was buying fresh chicken.
I binned mine too - that happened to me about 4 weeks ago - I had defrosted a pack and then kept smelling and smelling - thinking - is the "normal" smell of chicken - however, threw it out and bought more in supermarket and there is absolutely no smell of a chicken at all - bin it.
Hadnt read the £25 post - bring it back but keep it outside or bin it and tell them about it. Do think they would believe you.
I bought a dodgy chicken from a butchers. Luckily it was still open so I took it back. It was turning a greenish colour when I pulled the wings out.

Defrost and take back.

Why was it so expensive?
Question Author
jennyjoan, at £25 I'm reluctant to simply bin it. Apart from that they need to know they're selling bad meat.

rsvp, just tried ringing them. No answerphone.

ummmm, fresh organic boneless and skinless chicken breasts are expensive.
I know...obviously not fresh though.
