Neil talks about on this morning's Sunday Politics. It appears that Imam Shakeel Begg was on some community/interfaith what-not for Lewisham Council (he has now been dropped), was a volunteer Imam at a local hospital (has now been dropped) and - wait for it - was an "advisor" to the local police. So far Lewisham police think that the imam's "advice" is too valuable to lose and appear to have retained his services.

Begg has received the support of his mosque. The Muslim Council of Britain, to which the Lewisham Islamic mosque and cultural centre is affiliated has yet (as far as I can see) to comment.

A while ago now, Talbot, I had a brief exchange with Mikey over Anjem Choudary. I said that, unlike him (Mikey), I rather liked Choudary. The reason I gave was that Choudary has never pretended that he wanted anything other than to impose sharia on the rest of us. Of course, I had in mind the kind of people who share his agenda, but dissemble the fact. Shakeel Begg appears to be one of the latter sort. Interestingly he received support in the court case from the following character witnesses (I'm quoting Begg's Wiki entry):

Reverend David Rome of the Catford and Bromley Synagogue
Father Charles Pickstone, vicar of St Laurence Church, Catford,

Regarding your point about footfall, Talbot, I'm not expecting many of AB's great and good to comment. I think many deep down may suspect that moderation in the Muslim communities of Europe may not be as widespread as they claim to believe, but they have a massive stake (intellectual and moral) in the multiculturalist world view. Like me with African Barrick Gold, perhaps, they may not want to admit a mistake and monetise their losses. Rather hang on and hope.

Yes. I think the defenders of Islam (out of intellectual honesty, but also out of self-interest) ought to be looking at the judge's summary and thinking about its possible implications, Naomi. Why do you think they're so incurious?
