Am I over-complicating the end? I've filled in the grid, have the three unclued entries and know the 'theme'. But, "The three unclued entries will guide the solver to five clues, close viewing of which will lead them in turn to a location in the grid where they should place an appropriate four-letter word" I just cannot work out which the five clues are, although I'm pretty sure I know what the appropriate four-letter word is and where it goes!
Please can someone enlighten me?
Thanks in advance.

The five clues are the numbers given by the three words (put together) of the unclued entries. Four of them contain something identical, the other one contains the exact opposite. That last one is where I put the four-letter word.
Hope this helps!
You will notice that the clues are numbered 1-36 - the combination of the unclued entries should narrow the 36 clues down to 5.

Oh dear! I'm none the wiser (I only play poker!)I've looked up the three unclued words to see what they mean in the theme, but that hasn't helped. Also Neveracrossword when you say they contain something identical, is this a word? Must be the cold weather getting to my brain - sorry.
Ripper, hope I didn't make things worse! Four of the five clues contain the word 'lose' (sometimes obscured). The other word contains 'win' - that's where my four-letter word went. You probably have the correct place for it anyway!

Thank you Neveracrossword and Spoffy, I think my original idea of the four-letter word and where it goes was right all along! Roll on the warm weather!!
Glad your initial idea was right, Ripper.
I have finally reached the point where I have to replace the four letters in the location.
Three of the letters are easy to change because when changed crossing entries are still real words.
It is the first unchecked letter I am not sure of.
Best fit I can find is: when you win/lose, what gets affected in your pocket.

Am I close?

thanks.
You are close...in a certain game played in casinos, the wheel is divided into pockets - if the number you have selected is lucky, then when the wheel stops spinning a certain item will be resting in the pocket that you have selected...
Thanks Spoffy.
