chit is a kind of ticket, small piece of paper, receipt. Comes from Hindi word
'chithi' or 'chitty'. Much used in British Army to indicate the obligatory piece of paper with a signature, showing receipt of something, e.g. 'did you get a chitty for handing that uniform in?'
