Many thanks to the four of you for your very helpful replies. I did think of the pointer/setter dog combination but I got stuck on "superior" - presumably a pointer is superior to a setter - goodness only knows why! All protests from irish and other setters will be sympathetically considered.

OK dannyk13 - I take your point (no pun intended) - I still think a pointer is in no way superior to a setter. Anyway, doesn`t a setter go and fetch the prey instead of just standing around pointing?

You win, dannyk13 - but setters are generally much better looking dogs than pointers which definitely do not deserve the accolade "superior" bestowed upon them by the crossword setter (again, no pun intended).
