Crossbones
Could 19a be Speeder?

S+ Ed in Peer (dignitary)

Career could mean speed.

Trying to find a word for old ladies. I assume anagram of sobs appears inside.

Not having word lengths is making it difficult to solve.
I have about 17 answers.
Isabella in crones
That should have read ossb in crones
Thanks Antmark for crossbones.

Scottish words always confound me.

Mountains lacking dimension, old ones in Scotland.

anes .... andes minus the d giving anes ..sc word for ones

Thanks to Antmark for crossbones and hankir for speeder
Thanks ros.
I will be back.
Trying to see if I can fit the words I have in the grid but no go yet.
I've not got any in the grid yet either hankir...i shall try to solve my remaining 3 across clues and 7 downs , then have another go at the grid fit...
Thanks ros.
I am working on 3 across (12,14,17) and 11 down clues.

The two with British reference (22d, 23d): Hackney and Oxford.
I wonder if Hackney refers to the area or hy.
Oxford to university.
i can help a bit hankir ....
17 ... guess at set on ... notes (marks) reversed?
22d ides (fish) ( in Hackney ... hides/skins?)
23d I think Oxford refers to a shoe ...so answer possibly shoo / go away ??

Can you help with 11d?

Which downs have you got ...
I have notanda for 11d but cannot parse?
Just got it, a don reversed with tan in.
Whoops ... meant 11a not down but thanks anyway Negomi!
+Thanks ros.
Sorry I am just getting back to puzzles.
It's late for you.
11a is YELMs or Yealms but I cannot parse it.
I think straw bundles in the country is the def and Y+E A(re)lms.
I have following downs, after your help.

1. 2. 4,5,8,11.14.5.16.18.19.21.22.23.
Not all may be correct.
I think 24d is 4 letter word for tragic King.

For grid to be symmetrical, I think 1D and 19d have to match. Both are five letters long.
Also across clues pose a problem.
My first 3 across clues are 5 letter long but only one of the last three across clues is five letter long.
Without unclued lengths, this is going to be tough.
RE the across clues...The 1st across clue is unclued and will match up symmetrically with 19a 7 letters. 2a will match up with 18a unclued must be 5 letters, 3a will match up with 17a etc...?
Downs aren't so straightforward to match apart from 14d and 16d which the preamble says match up as they are the 2 abbrevs.
For 6d i have drug (guard minus a then jumbled)
9d melee (me is the note + eel reversed)
14d BMA

I haven't got 18d or 19d if you can help

Will look in much later as I am out soon
Thanks for 11a which must be yealms to match with 9a
Ros, I have Arcane for 18 D - Live around bog that's mysterious, Are, live, wit Can, bog, inside.
Thanks Neveracrossword ..looks good ....how is your gridfill going?
