I entered a local quiz earlier this year. The answers referred to the name of a wild flower, grass, herb or shrub. One question caused problems, and I had several suggestions. The question was:

L a L and the answer has been given as Centaury. I wonder if anyone on here could tell me why?

I can't see it at all!

100= century
LaL= centAury
L (50) and L (50) = 100, a century.

Thank you for your replies. Sorry I took so long to reply. Seems a bit of a vague clue to me, though.
The reason the clue doesn't work well is because 'Century' being seven letters can't be separated into two halves - ie 2 x L (50) then the 'A' in the middle.

I think we have to give amateur quiz setters raising money for good causes some leeway however.
