Sorry 40a is (6) .... an extra letter is filled in on entry

I think the extra letter to be filled in in 40a is "L" making the grid entry (answer to the clue + the L) ??I?ALS

I'm guessing the puzzle has special instructions that say something like "one letter in the clue has to be changed before solving" ...

Thank you Lie-in for MONA ... yes that one has a letter wrong in the defn.

I didn't realise that some clues have both ..i.e a letter wrong in the defn AND need a letter adding to the clue answer for grid entry.

21d must be one of these clues too...so slice is good.
