Thanks. I thought that was the answer but couldn't rationalise it. I even (briefly) thought of the character but it was only when I wrote it out (and corrected my spelling) that the penny dropped.

Re centre letter, the 9 are all initial letters of a group of related words. Look at where they occur in the grid.
