I have been called many things at the checkout: Duck, Pet, Love, My Sweet the the other day (must need a visit to specsavers!) but I am never offended as cearly no offence is meant, often it is simply colloquialism.

But seems these days someone must be offended about everything. What happened to live and let live?

I think that the lady complainer needs to get a life.
Loads of people don't like being called by pet names. Me, I don't even notice.
completely radio!
I reckon she'll eventually be boycotting all the shops!

I think the accepted generic terms are Sir and Madam.
When you think of how many grumpy, disorganised, talking on their phone customers checkout assistants encounter daily anyone who can still serve and be friendly deserves a medal...sad woman......x
Really, really slow news day.

Even that is dodgy in these days of gender changes, and when a Husband can be either male or female

The woman's a complete loon, but I did like this comment from her..

// She replied that if I didn’t like it I was free to use a different checkout operator. The checkout operator I chose was one at a completely different and cheaper supermarket. //
i'd rather be called by a pet name than 'sir' any day
ygritte madam is English- madame is French.
it would be a problem if i was addressed as sir or madam
i wouldn't mind at all, as long as they are polite and not grumpy as some often are.

I don't like to be called Madam or Cock/Cocka (Northern endearment!!). I've noticed that more people are calling me sweetheart, darling, love etc as I have become older. I don't remember being called these names when I was younger, but I don't mind them at all.
I don't think I've ever called someone outside my family by a pet name.
