Missed you all last week. We went to a film instead. Fantastic! God's Own Country ( which I am sure you all know is Yorkshire!) . Maybe a bit strong for some tastes and not the sort of picture SWMBO took me to!
Anyway, I have a problem this week ( and, due credit to SWMBO, I'd have had another except she knew the word swizz and the rest of 6 down became easy.) The one I can't get is 21 d " Americans at the outset cracking open beer while they get smashed at party" . I have p?n?t?s but can't work out the missing letters. Please help.

Pinatas, those donkeys/stuffed toys that you smash with a stick and sweets fall out. They're used at parties.
Pinetas?
Pints around A (American) x 2
With respect to Mamya, I don't think there are 2 Americans -

Pinatas - 'A(mericans)' (outset, in) 'pint' + 'as' (while)

Gosh! I never heard of them. More of my protected childhood being revealed!

Ta Maj - glad you straightened that out - obviously I never stick to 1 pint.

Totally missed the 'as'.
Question Author
Oh and the wonderful Mamyalynne being corrected! What ever next?
Steven
...I didn't parse it as I hadn't worked out where the 'as' came from. I had Pint for beer and A for America, but needed Lie-In King's explanation.

Sorry! I didn't say thank you to you all. Corner time!
