Apple Ipad Ios 11 Update - Wants A 4 Digit Passcode?

I wanted to update the IOS on my IPad from 10 to IOS 11. It asked for "my" 4 digit passcode? I am not aware that I have one!!! I've gogled for info and one article suggested some people have used "1234" as this might be a dafault code.
I did have two attempts using a 4 digit code that I use for certain other "things" but no joy. I'm worried that if I try and fail again, the ipad might lock up. I've never needed a 4 digit code before, so I've no idea what it is. I do use a 4 digit code to unlock my ipad, but I doubt that is what it's asking for. Any help is much appreciated.
