My main gripe is that the unclued answers accounted for more than 40% of the grid. I find that outrageous.

And those who found this "the perfect antidote to an icy evening" etc must live at a curious latitude. Down our way, the evening is a lot longer than 30-60 minutes.

On the question of the circled letters, it did help me find the song more easily (I had four to work with: 5d, 17a, 21d, 31d and they were enough to make me think of the source). But I wasn't a big fan of the puzzle, which seemed imbalanced.

I understand your point, Alekhine. I saw it as a weakness rather than an outrage, but some solvers have clearly felt short-changed. Without the unclued entries the average word length is below 5 in spite of two long clued entries, arguably another weakness.
The verse is suitable for cryptic treatment, and my feeling is that would have been a better approach.
Freiheid, I miscounted. You're right that four circled letters are checked. I'm not sure that would have helped me much, but fortunately I got the source by other means.
