I've battled my way through this, and am beached on 3 down on the right-hand side (*a*a*i). "...to electronics firm from East Bahrein (sic), not odd." I think this is the one in which an extra letter must be included (could be *atari, but I've no idea what). I'm also stuck on 6d, also on the rhs: "rather fashionable before transaction" (*n*e*e*). This also needs an added letter. Can anybody help......please?

Qatar is to the east of Bahrain, with someone from there being Qatari (also spelled 'Katari'). Does that help???

well even letters (not odd) of east bahrein gives you the ATARI which, I think, is/was an electronics company making toys......
so Buenchio's extra letter makes sense

I don't do the Guardian (hate it) but it seems from previous posts there are double-barrelled clues which give you entries to left and right grids. If that's so what is the first part of the clue, as I note you start off with '.....'?

Yes, thank you all, Qatari it is. Wow, that puzzle was like having my teeth pulled without anaesthetic, only worse. A hard slog, indeed. Many thanks again to those who helped me on the way. Now for a glass of some liquid anaesthetic.

I think 6 down on rhs may be "Indexed". In = fashionable and deed = transaction giving indeed = rather. The x is extra.
