= dig
as does a poke in the ribs

JJ109, I had similar thoughts, but couldn't find Dig as an abbreviation for dignity anywhere. The only one I came up with was in the phrase, infra dig, but nothing on its own.

"Infra dig" means "below ones dignity" and I have assumed the same abbreviation applies here. Even if not a formal abbreviation in the dictionary, I am convinced it is the correct parse.
