How's this for clutching at straws?
I don't have the original crossword, but if the 3rd letter was Y instead
of I, the word FLYWHEELS is possible. FLY and WHEEL could indicate ways of departing and an example of industrial plant.

Are all the clues in this crossword cryptic or straight please?
Faithless, Flichters, flighters, frightens...all fit but can't be parsed.
I have wondered if the clue contains a misprint- planet/plane? Leavers?
A plant that has 2 leaves is diphyllous but that clearly doesn't fit
