Yes everybody is clearly struggling with 15d. The only word that seems to fit is umbre but I can't parse that at all.
Upbye

Up (excitedstate) by (over) (issu)e?

Is it definitely Steeve for 20a?
Steeve seems right but if you can think of a word where "E"is not the last letter please let us know. Upbye seems to parse ok but can't find it in any of my dictionaries nor in connection with Glamis Castle.
Upbye is Scottish for upby (up the road, further on)

Glamis castle could be described as ‘up the road’ I.e. up north
Wow Toorak you may have cracked it - sure can't think of anything better but how tenuous a clue is that!
Question Author
Think I am going to go with upbye!
I could be wrong - but upbye is in chambers
Can't find it in my Chambers! Upbow is the last upb word!
Yes Collins but not Chambers (or not mine anyway!). I assume that Glamis Castle was just a whopping red herring!
So which words in the clue give the definition please?
And is Glamis Castle just a reference to being in Scotland so a Scottish word/spelling?
I took it that the question mark after ‘at glamis castle’ meant that it was an example of something ‘upbye’

But I could be completely wrong...
Thank you Toorak.
Beest wishes
