The terms are very short, even here the school year seems to be shorter, I believe in the UK children have only just start their summer holidays, they've been on holiday here (Rep of I) since end of June, when they go back it's to a mid term break in September
ducksie- I don't know about R of I, but the school year in the UK has remained the same length at 39 weeks/195 days for many, many years. Teachers are in school for a week or so more than that because of INSET days (which are sometimes in term time but usually tagged onto the start or end of term)
