Thank you everyone! Definitely 20 a and 24 a are correct! Is trial correct? It would fit the ' test' clue but would it fit ' balance'? Also I think I have an incorrect answer for another one, as Dig in now negates my 13 down! The clue is ' Soct had ground in more elevated surroundings'. The letters I have ( of 10) are*i*c*a***c

No! It is scot. Sorry. Typed too quickly. Also, if dig in is correct ( which I think it is) then the eighth letter is d, but if I go on the crossword solver it does not come up with anything. I may have the last letter wrong. The clue for the 26 a was Stone said old bird, which we thought was Cock. Maybe that is incorrect?
