I still have about a third of ink left in the black cartridge so why is all my printing presenting in brown, which is now getting a lighter brown? Thanks all

I'm not technically minded but I find taking the cartridge out and shaking it helps.
You could try a cleaning cycle.
The jets are becoming blocked. As Bhg481 suggests, cleaning them should fix the problem.

The 'official' route to access the cleaning facility varies between printers but this 'universal' one should get you there:
Click 'Start'
Click 'Devices and Printers'
Right-click on the icon for your printer.
Click on 'Printer properties' (NB: NOT just 'Properties')
Click on the 'Maintenance' tab.
Then click on 'Cleaning'.

If a simple 'clean' doesn't immediately fix the problem, look for a 'deep clean' option instead (and don't be surprised if you need to run it several times before the problem clears).
Are you using original inks or refills
