There may be an additional letter in the wordplay & the across answers may be reversed -
1 across: Artillery is stored in excellent US research facility in recession (8) sorry not many letters EA?????? 48 across: Dickie's sister runs away from Fred in a flap (8, 2 words) DR?S?T?E 36 down: Fuss over $5 bill at the end (5, 2 words) ?D?IN
Why are some of the lights shaded i.e. top & bottom rows? (me being thick)
With the extra letters the only word I've found is "Different" otherwise I need some hints as to what it states please!
Thanks in advance

artillery s the defn N was extra
48a anagram of sister + fred F is extra
36d ad fin O from adO was extra
when your grid is filled and you start the shading it should become clear why it is shaded how it is ....
ask again if you are stuck

Me again saladdodger!
I'm having trouble with artillery, something tells me it's a reversed word possibly starting with balis... ? But my Chambers is not helping!
Also the first word of the description (I've obviously got something horribly wrong I have NE?RSTES and my last word I have as COLLOSS - I feel that might be colour)
Oh dear, I'm hopeless!

Ripper ... you have the shading wrong.....
If you have a full grid look at the letters in the top left corner (not the one sin shaded cells) WNAT
GNIO
HS
An anagram of these letters gives .....
Now look at a map ...and you will see you need to shade in the whole of the grid leaving those already shaded cells. Any colours will do but not the same 2 clolours next to each other....
