Brick carrier’s job maybe at fiercely contested match (9-6) it is stretcher bearer but i am at a total loss to parse it. Can some kind soul enlighten me please?

Think I have misread the clue as Brick layer.

I think it is simply a very poor clue not really up to the usual daily mail standards probably the crossword editor missed that one
