8d- out something?
8 Outs-mart
14 Coma?
totter?
36a swot
34 tiller?
Sorrythought it might be a variant of teller but it isn't.
a totter reckons (as in adds up, like a tiller) but it doesn't quite work with "are somewhat infirm" except that someone who is somewhat infirm might totter

outsmart sounds good, but the 'o' comes from shot in the clue"tried, when one lunged at with a knife (3,1,4)" Had a shot
1 outsmart
had a stab
Question Author
8d I think it may be Outshoot or Outsport, with 14a being Case with the s being in 8d.

Certainly unsure.
Must be stab rathe rthan shot- you don't shoot with a knife.
Outsmart looks promising to me: market = mart
Question Author
Thank you all, I will now settle for Outsmart, Case, Totter, Swot and change "Tried, when one lunged at with a knife (3,1,4)" from Had a shot - to Had a Stab, this then gives me the 'a' in outsmart and Case (rather than Coma)gives me the 's'.

Very appreciative of all the help and hopefully we got there.
I'm still not convinced my 'totter' suggestion is right. I'm not convinced of CASE either
14 Agree with 'case' if you're at the hospital with a case you are staying and not going out (home) any time soon.
Sounds good, Captain. Case will be right then.
