If clue was WOOD singular I can see an even stronger case for TRAY as trays are often in (made from) wood

My copy of the DT says wood, not woods. Tray is often made of wood.

I originally had drey. Squirrel's nest (found in tree in the wood) storing nuts but I think tray is correct - often made of wood and carrying food.
