Call me pedantic but I would take issue with the answer to 30d. in the General Knowledge crossword. The clue is "gathering held after a funeral (4)" and the answer is WAKE. However, a wake is held before the funeral so that people can view the body of the deceased so it can't be held after the funeral because there's no body to be seen. Am I right?

So, aelmpvw, what do the Irish call the period before the funeral where they sit watch over the body?
A vigil?
For the Irish a Wake begins at the time of death - clocks were stopped, mirrors covered and candles burned, there was weeping, singing and drinking too.

The word has evolved in other societies.
