I will write it off to the experience account, don’t really like the singular impala or ‘and’ for ‘or’ , not my fave crossword ever!

Seems fine to me, Danny. The definition is animal (singular) and the central letters of either leoPArds or imPAla are P and A.
Not sure why anyone assumes that impala is singular - it is both singular and plural.
DOH, thanks Sedge, I was looking at it as one central letter in each word.
