Is it possible to send pictures etc to the memory card reader on my HP laptop.Or is it only One way ie read only.

Do you mean that you want to transfer "pictures" from the lappie to a reader so that you have them on file for whatever? Then yes you can. A lot depends on your system and the SD card of course. I did it some time ago but cannot remember the exact process but this may help.

A memory card functions as an external drive, in the same way that a USB memory stick does (and, indeed, other devices, such as your mobile phone or an MP3 player).

You can 'drag & drop' or 'copy & paste' files freely in either direction.
Would it not depend on whether you had a reader or a read/writer ?
^^^ A USB card reader is little more than a socket to hold the card (in the same way that a USB port is just a socket to plug a memory card into). It has no active parts (unlike a CD drive which needs a laser built into it in order to write to discs). You can both read and write to any card that's inserted into it.
