They said the world was closed today
So I went to have a look,
I found it with the shutters down
And the phone was off the hook.
So I stood there for a little while
But no one was around,
Then silence came and startled me
With the most alarming sound.
I asked him where the others were,
And why the streets were bare,
He whispered ‘Life had ran away
While death was playing there’
‘Oh no’ I said ‘It can’t be true
For life is not afraid’
‘But no one ever goes’ he said
‘Where death has ever played.’
I understood and walked away
As Hope was standing there
With Courage in her afterglow
And the sunlight in her hair.
She said ‘Go home to those you love
This is no place to be,
For if we walk these streets today
Then no one shall be free’.
She threw her light to lead the way
And showed me where to go,
The very road that life had gone
Where the future flowers grow.
Then death showed me another way
But I didn’t want to look,
So I stumbled home in time for tea
And I read another book.
It was called The World is Closed Today
And the streets we shouldn’t roam,
The first line said ‘Just please be safe’
And the ending - ‘Stay at Home’ stay safe.

Very poignant, hi Bobbs.
Sorry, that's far too mawkish for me!
Question Author
What does ‘mawkish’ mean?
Excellent! That ranks among the very few good amateur poems I've read on here. Brought a tear to my eye. It's all so very sad.
Question Author
Arh too sentimental ???
Question Author
And sadly very true Naomi?
Very well constructed.
Question Author
HI SK I hope you and your good lady are well, did you watch the Blackpool thing tother night?
That sort of stuff keeps appearing on my FB page and I hate it. Mawkish is strong enough - sentimental guff is better.

Keep calm and carry on.

Arrrgggghhhhh!
I guessing the last 2 words shouldn’t be there, as they are ruining the rhyme.
I see it as sentimental guff also. BUT, I understand that such gestures are appreciated by people when in an unknown situation .
Very good..
Question Author
I suppose it’s written for people with a heart not a swinging brick :0)

I knew the author was anon when I took it from my friends FB with her permission
Copied from mine

It's Your Fault

It's your fault
You are useless, you can't even cook
My bacon right
And you wonder when
Your sweet love changed
To this person you
Can't please but only anger
Your make up kit
Holds really good Concealer.
But it doesn't hide
That you walk
With eyes down
So no one sees the fear
That you did
While shopping
Something he didn't like
And will pay for later

You see yourself
And say I let myself go
That's why he hates me so
If I make more effort
Then he'll see
The reason why he married me
And wont, be quite
So angry

But still he storms
Or with quiet malice
Grinds you down and wears
Away the sense that you
Would be alright alone
"You are nothing with out me"
His oft repeated mantra
You take it in like a worm
That eats you from the inside
A parasite of his creation

Or you hit the wall
When fists he can't control
Hit you hard
'Worthless C***'
Useless b***h
You're going nowhere
You are mine and I will find You
And kill you, kill the kids
And you believe, and cry you will try, harder
He doesn't even show remorse
Like before

He doesn't say he will never do it again
You lost faith in that promise
Months ago
He doesn't say anything
Except you made me angry
It's your fault
And now in lockdown
You don't wait for his key in the lock
Because he is there, watching
You get clumsy with fear
And that just feeds his anger
And you look at the door
And what it could mean
Just a few steps
Just a few
But you stay
And become a statistic
And a shock to the neighbours
Who claim surprise
We never knew.......

The author should go public...though someone may know who she is.
The streets are empty, the land is bare,
Of crowds of people taking the air,
In cities and in every town,
All that matters is the big lockdown.
I borrow a dog to go for a walk,
But can't find anyone with whom to talk.
I took the dog around the park,
But he found nothing at which to bark.
I took him back and handed him over,
Happy to see the back of old Rover,
For he drew blood on the back of my hand,
By now I wasn't feeling grand.
This !lockdown is really taking g its toll,
And I'm running out of toilet roll.
At home I walk from room to room,
Talking to friends, Mary Mop and Billy Broom,
I lovingly stroke the fridge and go,
To watch the telly, another show,
On how I should be spending my time,
Cooking cupcakes and writing in rhyme.
Question Author
