Many thanks Professor Maisie. I thought I must have gone wrong somewhere - your answer means my solution to 1 across is wrong: Flattened like some plants in rose beds prepared with entry for competition (12) - I had "decompressed" .

The b in bharat means that the second letter of 1 across is now b. Can you help with that too?
