I have SOLAH, a tree pith comes from.
LAVISH TOPI could be an anagram of VIP SOLAH IT, but I can't see how the IT fits.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think that it was originally intended to be a composite anagram &lit, with 'it' rather than 'this', but the 'it' would then be doing double duty as both a direct part of the anagram fodder and a representation of the solution. The 'this' now represents the solution, but the IT has gone missing. Something like this might just about work:

If the clue had read "VIP kitted out with it", it could work as Geevo says, but if "this" has to become "it", that would be a partial indirect anagram, which seems to be a no-no.
JJ, I too wondered about "see" as it seems superfluous in the clue.
If it is an error, it's a rare one in this crossword.
