As it happened, this all fell into place neatly (though it wasn't an easy puzzle, by any means). Hugely enjoyable; a classic Listener.
Incidentally, Terry Pratchett fans may remember that he used a similar wordplay in his book Soul Music. For me it was the best gag in the book!
