Letters carried by KLM? Yes and no! (8) A?P?A?E? It would seem it has to be ALPHABET (Letters), but could someone please explain the wordplay. I have a strong feeling I'm not seeing something that is very basic.

Not a very good clue imho. I'm guessing it's Yes, letters (mail) are carried by KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) but No, "KLM" does not carry the alphabet: the alphabet carries "KLM"

KLM are successive letters in the alphabet and klm is a carrier (airline)
