Answer is ; Gun running.
I can find no connection between gun-running and gentlemen-at-arms, if anyone could give a better parse than arms being guns. The Times usually has a better parse.

Historically they were an armed escort in battle, perhaps that could loosely mean they ran alongside with weapons?

You may well be right, Mamya, I usually find that the Times has a parse with a far better "fit"
I agree with Gun but running does not sit well with me.
What crossing letters do you have Donny?
How old is the book?

If you go back to the 1400's they were armed with spears and lances.
Couldn't find any reference to guns.Were arms smugglers called Gentlemen-at-arms I wonder.

Danny, I could not find any reference to arms smugglers being known as gentlemen -at -arms, it was one of my first thoughts.

Ichkeria , the book was published 2016 as the Big Book of Cryptic Crosswords.
