General Question About Genius B210

I have most of the clues solved cold. When altering them according to the letter shift code, does every letter have to be encoded? For example, I have SPIT for 21 across (HAWK IN SMALL HOLE). From the only crosser it seems that I=T, so the number of letters between T and I is 10 making S=H, P=E and T=I. But, HETI is not a word.
I would be grateful for any help.

spit is correct but it changes into date....think you must have listed the letters incorrectly for the code...I =T, J=U,K=V....and so on to S=D etc
Yes - spit is correct

I = T
BUT>>>>>
That is 11 letters hify

S = D
P = A
I = T
T = E
hify? - I meant to type "shift"!
Not all of the differences are plus.
The difference between T and I is minus 15.
sorry, plus or minus gives the same thing. Anyway, DATE is right!
Prof - if you regard them as a loop, they can always be plus!

T + 11 = UVWXYZABCDE

crossed

Thank you Roslyn and jj109. Your posts are a great help. I was counting the number of letters in between rather than the number including the starting letter.
I will persevere.

My first reply was posted before I saw the answer from Prof maisie. Thanks to you too.
Yes, JJ109 - it was just my quirky way of doing things (trying not to go 'over the edge')!
Versalius - I think what you did was count forwards with I to T, but backwards with the others!
No, wrong again - never mind (it was a long time ago and anything mathsy disturbs me no end!).
...that was to me, not you JJ109 - I think vesalius was doing it my way, unfortunately.
