Most likely parsing is error in the way the solution was entered. "Saws" is obviously correct (saw = noticed, + s = small). Perhaps an earlier version had "sown" with a different clue.

Yes, I had SAWS originally (which is still marked as wrong on-line with SOWN still given as the right answer) and wondered if I was missing something!

I believe you are correct, the clue has been altered from an earlier version but not the answer.
