I've just watched Emmerdale for the first time in literally years, probably 10 years or more.
Emmerdale as far as I know has always been about life in a little fictional Yorkshire village of the same name.
My question is... why are there so many black, asian and mixed race people in this little english village?? Judging by tonights episode, and I've been told this has been the norm for quite some time, well over 50% of the residents are non white. It was like I was watching a north African soap.
I live in a small west sussex village, bigger than Emmerdale is supposed to be. We have ONE black resident and he was adopted.
I have nothing against seeing non whites on tv but come on, over 50% in a little Yorkshire village??? Let's be realistic!!!
Is this just the woke tv producers pushing their wokeness (if there is such a word) on to us? Because we also have the same situation with adverts to.
In fact if you watch tv nowadays, certainly in the uk, but I suspect everywhere else too, you could be forgiven for thinking non whites were the majority.
Why are tv companies and the media in general doing this???

...and it's not only ethnicity. Keep watching and you'll see that the other half of the population is gay or bisexual.
It's nothing like 50% of the cast. But I see from your post history that this is one of your hobby horses so crack on.
Dont want Emmerdale but a noticed Corrie has introduced a bLM storyline with a sidestory from nowhere of a black lad being stopped then released by police for no reason and now the family are talking about there fears of bringing there child into an unfair world for black people. Its also noticeable that most news stories showing typical families are more likeley to be BAME than white English and never welsh! But maybe its just correcting the imbalence from the past

Yes gingejbee. That was going to be my follow up!!!

Chinajan I think you need to re-check that!!!
I doubt the majority of viewers would even notice. Let alone care.
It's the law .. every ad has to have a mixed race couple these days .. and if it doesn't, the law then states you need a gay couple instead ... or both !

Pixie374. That's where you're wrong. People are noticing.
We're all human and some humans apply for acting jobs and some of those humans get the jobs.

Tiggerblue.... ??? What a ridiculous comment!
A better question Judderman is why does it bother you so much?
gawd, whatever possessed you to start watching again? Must be like starting smoking again after 10 years!
That's fine by me.

Mozz71. It's the woke agenda that bothers me, and that is exactly what it is.
It is not suppose to be accurate, it is fiction.
It is a vehicle to write entertaining stories and attract viewers. The UK population is diverse, and that is the target audience.
A tri-weekly show about sheep farmers would have very little appeal.
last time I saw it all they ever said was "ee by eck ma it's parkeh" and went to the pub where Amos would pour a pint!
Tiggs didn't make a ridiculous comment. If you notice and it bothers you, maybe you should wonder why.
Sunk you need to research viewing figures on Countryfile and the Farmers Showdown then you can advise on sheep.
I don't watch it but I thought I'd check. There is a list of all current characters in the link below, if you think half of them are non-white I think you should get you your eyes tested or a new TV.

Looks to be about 1 in 10 to me.

Well, and I have to add the disclaimer that I don't watch Emmerdale, or any other soap for that matter, so I'm prepared to be wrong, but the pnly black characters I could find in the cast pics online was the new vicar and his son. Am I missing something?
