Tee (support) off (switch position)
The 'trickiest parts' of this 'nice-looking challenge' should be satisfying, Matakari. Hope you manage OK!

Oh, yes, NACW, I got the name to link the perimeter entries, but do not fathom where to start to trace the 9-letter word in a spiral( as suggested by ProfessorMaisie) to end in the barred-off cells forming the square. Still looking at it intently.

Want to be sure too about this:

5(D) Made weary taxmen fly (5): TRIED

Many thanks in advance for any further suggestions!
weary = TIRED with I(nland) R(evenue)(taxmen) 'flying/reversing'
I think 5 D was Irked, made weary . IR, Inland Revenue and Ked, fly.

Matakari, even with all the assistance, you seem to still have errors!

Thanks, NACW, then the last of my perimeter answers is wrong:

Mistake unknown (5) ?I?K?
ricky?
No idea really- just rick (mistake) + y (unknown)
But no defanition. Is there a theme??
Question Author
Bobbinwales, perimeter answers are clued by wordplay only.
so is Ricky okay?
Which letters are wrong?
Question Author
Here is a look at the preamble:
Perimeter answers are clued by wordplay only, and are linked thematically. They are given in order and are to be entered clockwise starting from a point to be determined. All other clues are normal.
A nine-cell thematic area is to be highlighted in the finished grid. This includes the barred cell whose letter will help identify the location of two missing or damaged parts of the key perimeter answer. These should be written below the grid. (4 words)
Chambers 2016 edition is the main reference but does not give a place name, a common phrase, or a common variation (in Collins).
so could be ricky. Can you see how ricky fits into the theme- you said
" I got the name to link the perimeter entries, 2
Cant help anymore. Get the impression we'er both fairly new to cryptics
Yes, it's RICKY (a 'rick' or 'ricket' is a mistake).
Matakari, as you already have the theme (having the rest of the perimeter entries) the answer from Bobbinwales should have helped.

PS In thematic puzzles, it's a bit unfair to omit crucial information... (I'm trying to avoid saying 'again'!)
Bobbinwales at 19.43, you've solved some great clues recently! Matakari omitted to give some useful information, making things less clear for you and other helpers.
third time lucky?
Thanks neveracrossword- but just meant am throwing in the towel on this one , not on all crosswords
Thanks, Bobbinwales. I knew what you meant about giving up on this puzzle. By the way, Matakari's not 'fairly new' to cryptics, he's been doing these themed crosswords for about 10 years!

Sorry, I must remember to supply all the relevant info at all times!
Now, I have no clue where to start to trace the 9-letter word in a spiral...ProfessorMaisie, please put me out of my misery!
