contestant = anag of can not with "test" inside, so I think emmie has it.
Question Author
Thanks emmie. Looks good - I am just trying to work it out. Presumably "can't" is around "on test" Does that work do you think?

Question Author
Yes thanks bhg481 as well as emmie I reckon that is it. However that gives me another problem with a different clue! This clue is "modish youth will accept one so decorated" (6)
What letters do you have?

Question Author
I thought the answer was inlaid but I now think the 5th letter is "A" as a result of contestant!
In la i d

Question Author
No I think both contestant and inlaid are right but if they are this mucks up my other clue. "winger putting money into bag"(6) I now have -i-n-t. I thought the answer was gannet but it can't be if inlaid is right!
That clue was answered the other day as "fiscal".

"Having eaten try making an appeal"(8) The answer must be entreaty which is an anagram of eaten try. That is where the T comes from!
