39 Pert, forward. Prest loses the S, Sabbath. The I from Priest moves into 'plant' in 41 leading you to an anagram. 'Mouldy smell' is the definition.
Hankir, sorry I missed that you already had Prest and Pliant. I was too busy thinking of the clues. Here's an extra one for 41 - 'pruning' indicates the usual in wordplay.

What is 1a.
I have phrases from across and down clues.
Not sure what to do with them.

Probably something to do with Professor Henry Higgins or his student.

Hankir, my 1 A could be iffy, so I'll let someone else help with that! The messages, phrases that appear are quite clear, I think the one from the Across clues is more helpful - though I am not sure you'll have twigged that it's a song?
... Song, children's song, rhyme...

The letters from down clues spell a verse from the movie, which Eliza sings.
The fourth line of the children's song from across letters has the title of Eliza's movie. The title is 2,4,4.

Which column is first row does it start?
1a is SOAKED - 'as' = SO + AKED = 'continuously hurt' (the archaism indicated by ''old man's'').
Hankir, the highlighting may be more involved than you think. There was lots of helpful stuff on an earlier thread, my explanation might confuse you!
...the 'A' in soAked is the 2nd letter to be highlighted, hankir.

I will come back to this later as I am not seeing anything right now.
Ifor gave a big hint with 'noted' in the final sentence of his preamble.

Noted may mean it has something to do with Do Re Mi.....

or 12 pitches. (A, B etc.)

But that is where my knowledge ends.

If you google ''musical notation for... (the UK location)'' you'll get the sequence, hankir.
Each row in the top half of the grid has 5 of them (1 per row) and there are 6 of them (1 per row) in the bottom half.

I had tried it and got G-A G F E-F G.
The first G is missing and that confused me.
I see the rest starting with A.
...there's only 1 in the top row, 4 in the 2nd row... (keep working along the rows moving diagonally).
...the first G is on the 2nd row.

Just finished the Listener grid.
How long is the first word from across letters. I see second word as 8 letters.
Also down clues spell how many words and what length. I only have 7 letters.

I think I see three words connected with A. Two of them party names.
First word is 7 (the plural of what you've just written in your last sentence).
There are 11 letters missing from down clues but most of them match the 12 letters missing from across clues (they don't form a separate phrase). I think you already have the two words you need (7+8 letters).
