1d Gap in boxer's defence offering small possibility of success. Ans must be "fighting chance" which is a small possibility of success -but how is it a small gap in a boxer's defence, please?

Something 'Happening by chance' means something that occurs accidentally, or fortuitously. 'Fighting' clearly refers to a boxer, and 'a small possibility of success' is, as already described, is something that just, simply, happens. And, if I may say so, the clue does not refer to 'a small gap in a boxer's defence'.
