Thanks everybody, I should have got most of those. I'm still not happy though about the parsing of MACAQUE. I get that a CAM is a rotating part of a machine (ie is something that revolves), but if "revolutionary" refers to CAM, that means "eccentric" is a reversal indicator which it normally isn't - it's an anagram indicator. Sorry to be pedantic, but The Times is usually meticulous about these things.

Also, no one has yet explained PHOTO FINISH.

A cam is an eccentric - Bradford's has it & Collins gives -

a moving piece of machinery, as a wheel or projection on a wheel, that gives an eccentric rotation or a reciprocating motion to another wheel, a roller, a shaft, etc., or that receives such motion from it
