The first step is that the person wants to stop taking whatever substance they are using. They need support from their family and friends and their sponsor to have a chance of success. I have not been through any of these programmes but I know people who have completed the 12 steps and those that haven't.
Today is my 13th consecutive day without a drink. In my entire adult life, apart from the time I was in prison, I've never been sober for so long.
So what's going right for me now? I'm in a quiet house in the countryside, getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, and, most importantly I think, no stress.
I've attended AA meetings in the past and you see and hear people who have turned their lives around. They've been sober for years with the help that AA has given them.
It can work for you if you're determined to stop drinking.
