5 D. Name of a former footballer,(English I think)sounds as if he would have difficulty walking.

10 . Forcibly removes is the definition. You need an English captain, skipper, inside the usual America and pressure.
4 D. An unusual word meeaning 'swing higher'. There's a species of Javanes tree which loses 'accepted', followed by a very common word for 'technique'.

You haven't given any information on what letters you have (nor indeed the clues), so it's hard to work out how much of a 'nudge' is needed.
6d def is sporting slang for 'thrash' - ??(O) ???(L) is the 2 word shape for 'excessively thoroughly' (then remove both ends).
14a is an obscure word - the usual 3 letters for 'was first' inside 3 letters for 'modern' [all reversed] def is a skiing term.

Thanks for your help but still struggling with 5d as expected a Scottish footballer and an O from what I hope is the correct ans to 10a( my skipper was a 'roo !!)
Regarding the theme - 8d is in Italian (6+5 letters) and the preamble mentions a 'centenary' so add 1921 to the place and do a search for the event.
The English cricket capt is Joe ???? and the English footballer is Glen H????? (it's a Scots word for waddle)
