Changes To The Highway Code Coming Into Effect 29 January 2022
Some of you may not be aware of significant changes to the highway-code, soon to come into effect.
One of the major changes is that vehicle drivers turning into a road are to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been crossing a road on foot, observing that no traffic was indicating to turn into that road – only to find a motorist (who had attended the clairvoyant school of motoring) was turning into the road without indicting, nearly hitting me.
I can foresee many problems with this change of rule (besides people not knowing about it), at busy pedestrian areas, road traffic will come to a standstill due to a continuous stream of pedestrians crossing the road.
I don’t know if this rule exists within other countries, but my general experience abroad is that pedestrians are lucky if traffic stops for them at a zebra-crossing.
